Who can use the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS)?
Businesses, individuals, federal agencies, tax professionals, payroll services, and financial institutions.
How does EFTPS work?
With EFTPS, you may authorize electronic payments whenever you want, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You may enter payment instructions up to 120 days in advance for businesses and 365 days for individuals. Payments must be scheduled at least one calendar day prior to the tax due date by 8:00 p.m. ET. Your payment instruction will be executed on the date you select, and your records will be updated at the IRS.
Is there a cost to use EFTPS?
There is NO cost for using EFTPS if you schedule the payment online or by phone.
Why should I use EFTPS?

If I want to use EFTPS by both phone and online, do I have to enroll in each separately?
No. EFTPS payment methods are interchangeable.
How long does it take to complete the enrollment process?
Your PIN and instructions on obtaining a password will be mailed separately to you within seven business days.
What if I use a payroll service or an accountant?
You may enroll in EFTPS even if a third party makes tax payments. Check with your provider to determine which taxes are being paid on your behalf.
If I use EFTPS, will the government have unlimited access to my checking account?
No. You initiate all your payments.
