Frequently Asked Questions about Debit Cards:
Q. Do I need to notify the bank that I am traveling?
Yes, fraud prevention tools are in place which could impact your ability to use your card. If you are going to be traveling to a different state or country, it is very important that you notify the bank prior to leaving and update your contact information in case issues arise with a card purchase. If you do forget to notify the bank prior to leaving, you can contact the bank at any time during your travel.
Q. How is an NVB Debit Card different from a credit card?
Instead of accumulating on a monthly credit bill, transactions are deducted from your NVB checking account. The card bears the MasterCard logo because some transactions are processed through the MasterCard network.
Q. What types of transactions can I make?
An NVB Debit Card can be used worldwide to obtain cash from your checking account at any ATM affiliated with the Exchange network.
It may also be used in place of cash or a check for everyday purchases at stores, gas stations, restaurants and telephone orders where MasterCard is accepted.
Q. May I use my Debit card for purchases on the Internet?
Yes, it may be used just like a credit card to make Internet purchases. MasterCard has an Internet security product, SecureCode. We encourage you to register your card and create a password for use when making purchases with participating merchants. To enroll your Debit Card and create your password click on this link MasterCard SecureCode.
Q. How does the card work?
NVB Debit Card transactions are authorized by you through a Personal Identification Number (PIN), issued by the bank, or by your signature. ATM transactions are always PIN-based, while purchases may be authorized by a PIN or your signature. This determines how the transaction is processed. The money is always deducted from your account, usually in one to four days. You will receive a receipt for your transaction, and it will also appear on your NVB account statement.
Q. Does it make any difference whether I use my PIN or sign a ticket?
PIN-based transactions are treated as cash. To protect your privacy, limit the use of your PIN to ATM transactions only. If your card is lost or stolen, you have no liability for signature-based transactions.
Signing a debit card transaction insures additional fraud and dispute protection through the MasterCard system. When making a purchase with your NVB Debit Card, always request credit (not debit). If you are asked to use a keypad, simply push the credit key. Some stores now ask customers to enter their PIN. In this situation, do not enter the PIN and select cancel on the keypad. Then ask the salesperson to re-enter your purchase as a credit.
Q. How will I receive my new card?
It will be sent via U.S. Mail to your home address.
Q. May I get more than one card for the same account?
Each account owner or signer is allowed to have one card per account.
Q. May I choose my own PIN?
A PIN will be assigned to you. It will arrive in a separate envelope. You may change it any time by calling a toll-free number.
Q. Are any fees charged for using this card?
There are no fees for purchase transactions, however, fees will be assessed when the card is used at a non-NVB ATM.
These fees include:
- $1.50 for withdrawal at other machines.
- $1.50 for balance inquiry at other machines.
- $7.50 replacement card.
- $1.00 for a denied transaction at other machines. View complete list of Nodaway Valley Bank ATM's.
